Axel Krook was born in England to a Swedish father and Scottish mother. He commissioned into the 6th Lancashire Fusiliers before transferring to The Black Watch in 1901 and serving with the regiment in South Africa. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he was second in command of D Company, 1st Battalion, under Captain Harold Amery. He was captured at the Gheluvelt Crossroads on 29th October 1914 and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war. He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions during the First Battle of Ypres.
In 1922 he became embroiled in a public scandal after leaving his wife and children to live in Latvia with an unnamed woman, and resigned his commission.
