George Stewart-Murray

Lord George Stewart-Murray was the 3rd son of John Stewart-Murray, 7th Duke of Atholl, and brother of John Stewart Murray, 8th Duke of Atholl (also of the 3rd Black Watch). He originally gained a commission in the 3rd Battalion, before transferring to a regular commission in the 1st Battalion in 1894. He served with The Black Watch and The Scottish Horse (a regiment raised by his brother) during the Second Anglo-Boer War. At the outbreak of the First World War he served as the junior major of the 1st Battalion, commanding A Company until he was killed in action at the Battle of the Aisne on 14th September 1914 at the age of 41. His body was not recovered, and he is commemorated on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial.
