JBS “Jack” Haldane was a noted scientist in civilian life credited with the introduction of the “primordial soup” theory of the origin of life. Commissioned into the 3rd Battalion, The Black Watch, in 1914, he was an enthusiastic and aggressive soldier, described by Sir Douglas Haig as “The bravest and dirtiest officer in my army”. In 1961 he renounced his British citizenship and became an Indian Citizen
