Nigel John Lawson Boyd was commissioned into The 1st Battalion, The Black Watch in Februrary 1914. He was the son of Edinburgh lawyer and Writer to the Signet William Boyd and Nova Scotian Laura Crerar. He passed out 4th in the order of merit from the Royal Military College. In August 1914 he accompanied the battalion overseas, commanding a platoon of D Company. On his 20th birthday he was seriously wounded during the Battle of the Aisne when a bullet ricocheted off his scabbard and lodged in his bladder. He was operated on at Rouen, but died of a blood clot on 12th October 1914. His body was repatriated, and he was buried with full military honours in the Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh on 19th October.
