William Allan served in the ranks and as a commissioned officer in the Imperial Yeomanry during the 2nd Boer War before transferring to the Black Watch in February 1902. He served as senior subaltern and 2nd in command of C Company of the 1st Battalion at the outbreak of the First World War.
