William Fowler enlisted in the Black Watch in July 1884. He served during the Second Anglo-Boer War and rose to be Regimental Sergeant Major of the 1st Battalion. He was commissioned as Lieutenant and Quartermaster in the 1st Battalion in January 1911 and served in this capacity throughout the First World War. He served as Adjutant and Quartermaster of the School of Musketry, Hythe, from 1919 to 1921, before becoming Recruiting Officer for the 42nd Regimental District (Fife, Perthshire, Dundee and Angus). He retired from the army in 1931 and became the first curator of the Black Watch Regimental Museum.
