James Kennedy enlisted in The Black Watch in 1900. He saw action in the Second Anglo-Boer War and was a member of the King’s guard at the 1911 Delhi Durbar. At the outbreak of the First World War he served as a company sergeant major in the 2nd Battalion, and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in November 1914. He was commissioned in December 1914 and appointed captain and adjutant of his battalion in February 1915. He was awarded the Military Cross and subsequently commanded the 13th Battalion, The Welsh Regiment.
