John Stewart transferred to The Black Watch as a captain in 1906. He retired in 1914 and was recalled to service at the outbreak of war. He served as second in command of the 9th Battalion under Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Lloyd. He commanded the 2nd Battalion in Mesopotamia.
