James Blair was received a regular commission in The Black Watch in South Africa on 26th June 1901. He served as Aide de Camp to General Willox during the Mohmand Expedition in 1908. He transferred to The Gordon Highlanders in 1911 and served during the First World War. He was second in command of the British Forces in Vladivostok and commander of the Anglo-Russian Brigade during the Russian Civil War. He died in Yugoslavia while serving as a Military Attaché to Belgrade in 1925. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.
