Thomas Berkeley commissioned into the 73rd Regiment of Foot on 13th August 1879, which in 1881 became the 2nd Battalion of The Black Watch. He served during the Sudan Campaign and the Second Anglo-Boer War, being wounded at the Battle of Magersfontein. He commanded the 2nd Battalion before retiring in 1903. He re-joined the regiment in 1914, and was killed in action at the Somme on 20th May 1916.
