James Reid Nelson, son of Rev. William Nelson of Dundee, commissioned into the 7th (Fife) Battalion, The Black Watch, in 1915. He continued his studies at the University of St Andrews while serving in the 3rd line battalion (3/7th) before being posted to the 1/7th in France. He was killed in action during the Battle of Arras on 23rd April 1917, aged 23.
